Teacher’s notes:
This collage artwork can be used to inspire children to create their own space-themed artwork and express thoughts and feelings through art. During a class discussion, guided and led by the teacher, children can explore ideas about the artwork. Such as, who the man in the collage? how he is feeling? Where do you think he is going?
Children can then go on to create their own space inspired collage using materials such as:
Tissue paper, foil, coloured card, pencils/felt tips, glitter, glue, gems/jewels, cotton wool, corrugated card, yarn/wool, wooden sticks, and scissors, sand, coffee filters, cups/masking tape – templates for circles (planets) etc.
This demonstrates a wide range of choices presented to the children, which intends to provide the opportunity to explore the range of uses and representations of these materials.
Additionally, the teacher could ask children how they would feel if they were travelling into space (in relation to the man in the chosen image). Teachers could then take photographs of children’s expressions, demonstrating this emotion.
The photographs could be a headshot or full body photo and scaled down to an appropriate size. Children could then use these photos to incorporate themselves into their artwork. For example, they could be an astronaut in space or on a planet, or inside a rocket.
Alternatively, children can be given pencils/felt tips to draw themselves into their artwork.
Learning Intention:
- I can express thoughts and feelings through art (ELG)
- I can experiment to create different textures
Early Learning Goal: They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.
Early Learning Goal: I can safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function (DfE, 2012: 44).
Cross-curricular links:
PSED – They are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities. They say when they do or don’t need help (DfE, 2012: 11).
30 – 60 months Expressive art & design: Exploring and using media and materials:
Enabling Environments:
- ‘Lead imaginative movement sessions based on
children’s current interests such as space travel’ (DfE, 2012:44) - ‘Extend children’s experience and expand their imagination through the provision of pictures, paintings…’ (DfE, 2012:46.
Key questions:
- How do you think the person inside the rocket is feeling? How do you know?/What clues are there?
- How would you feel if you were travelling into outer space? Why? What things would you take with you?
- Let’s pretend we are inside a rocket flying into space, what things can you see out of the window? (Get children to ‘zoom’ around the room, shout ‘freeze’, ask them what they can see?)
